Artisanal coffee shop set to open in One Main building

CHAMPAIGN — Bossa Nova, an artisanal coffee and sandwich shop, hopes to open next month in the former Snow Meets Coffee space in the One Main building in downtown Champaign.

At Bossa Nova, customers will choose their own coffee beans, which will be ground on the spot and brewed using a hybrid pour-over method, said Mina Hanna, who will run the shop.

"You're going to pick your type of coffee, and it's ground right away," Hanna said. "You're getting all the flavor right then and there."

The shop will also serve artisanal hot and cold sandwiches, salads, tea and pastries.

Hanna, who moved to Urbana a few years ago with his wife, said he has 25 years of experience operating coffee shops and restaurants on the East and West coasts.

They decided to call the coffee shop Bossa Nova, which means "new wave" or "new trend" in Portuguese, because the hybrid pour-over method they're using is new to the area.

"It's a new method of making coffee," Hanna said.

He expects Bossa Nova to fare better than Snow Meets Coffee, which closed in October after two years in its location next to the former Merry Ann's Diner.

The diner closed its downtown location late last month when its lease was up.
