Teen hurt after throwing herself over third-floor railing in Piatt courthouse

MONTICELLO — A teenager who threw herself over a third-floor bannister Tuesday at the Piatt County Courthouse suffered a neck injury and is being treated at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Piatt County Sheriff David Hunt said the 16-year-old, who was waiting for a juvenile court hearing outside a third-floor courtroom around 11 a.m., "walked over to the bannister on the third floor on the west side and threw herself over the railing."

She hit a staircase bannister and landed on the second floor of the courthouse between the offices of the state's attorney and circuit clerk.

Sheriff's officials, Monticello Fire and Rescue and Kirby Ambulance personnel responded.

Despite the neck injury, Hunt said the injured teen should recover.

Discussion on how to prevent such an incident in the future may come up at a county board committee meeting Sept. 5.

"We'll discuss it at the building and grounds meeting to see if we can take precautions," said Hunt, who added that courthouse staffers could do not remember a similar incident happening at the courthouse in downtown Monticello.
