Westville motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after vehicle-pedestrian accident

WESTVILLE — A Westville man was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana on Wednesday after an accident on Illinois 1 involving his motorcycle, a pickup truck and a jaywalking pedestrian.

According to the preliminary crash investigation by Illinois State Police, about 11 a.m. Wednesday, a 60-year-old Westville man was driving a Dodge Ram north on Illinois 1 near Greenwood Avenue, between Belgium and Danville, when a pedestrian ran in front of his truck. The driver slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

A 28-year-old Westville man who was on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle behind the Dodge truck swerved to avoid hitting it when it braked for the pedestrian but clipped the rear end. The motorcycle went into the southbound lanes of the road, tipped onto its side and came to rest facing northwest.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to Carle; his condition is unknown.

State police cited the pedestrian for crossing at an area other than a crosswalk, failure to yield to traffic and walking improperly on the roadway.
