Holiday weekend, Hawaii hurricane prompt call for blood donations

URBANA — Blood donors are especially needed this week, according to Community Blood Services of Illinois.

Not only is there a holiday weekend approaching, but the organization also hopes to be able to continue taking part in a national effort to support the blood supply in Hawaii following Hurricane Lane.

Blood drives in Hawaii were canceled on Thursday and Friday, and the blood centers in the state were expected to have limited operations for many days, according to Community Blood Services.

It shipped blood components to Hawaii on Monday and is seeking all eligible donors to step up this week to help maintain local supply for hospitals.

Donations of all blood types are needed. There is a special need for type O-negative and O-positve whole-blood donors, type AB plasma donors, and platelet donors, the local agency said.
