Everyone out of the pool: Sholem closes for cleaning after disease warning

CHAMPAIGN — The Sholem Aquatic Center in Champaign was closed for 24 hours starting Thursday afternoon after health officials warned about a swimming-related disease outbreak in central Illinois.

The closing was posted late Thursday afternoon on the aquatic center's Facebook page.

"To ensure the safety of our guests, we will be closed for 24 hours for a complete clean and treatment," the notice said. "We anticipate being open (this) afternoon and throughout the weekend."

The outbreak was identified as cryptosporidium, an infection that causes a diarrheal illness, according to the aquatic center.

Urbana's Crystal Lake pool remained open with normal hours, according to the pool staff.
