You're probably aware of Red Grange's gigantic statue just to the west of Memorial Stadium.

But the famous Illini has a presence in downtown Champaign, too.

He's right there in a second-floor window above the 'N' that's part of the giant lettering 'JOS. KUHN & CO.' at 33 Main St. It's a life-sized portrait of the Galloping Ghost — not in football gear but looking debonair in a three-piece suit.

The story goes that Grange, while at the UI, happened upon the clothing store — as pointed out in this week's "Tom's Mailbag," Kuhn's moved into its current location in 1907 — and he was talked into modeling a $50 suit.

Several years ago, current general manager GordOn Tracey had the black and white photo — as well as one of longtime WCIA weatherman Wyndham Roberts ("Mr. Roberts") — converted into window dressing.

"I get 5-10 people every month come in and ask me who they are," Tracey said. "When I tell them about Red Grange, they're surprised. Most Red Grange photos are of him wearing a helmet."
