Champaign man gets 5 years after violating probation for having stolen car

URBANA — A Champaign man convicted in 2015 of possessing a stolen vehicle has been resentenced to five years in prison.

But Douglass Driver, 25, who last lived on West Vine Street, was not present Friday to hear Judge Heidi Ladd impose the sentence.

In December 2015, Driver was sentenced to 30 months of probation after pleading guilty. But when he failed to report to a probation officer for several months both last year and this year, the state took steps to revoke his probation.

Driver appeared in court in July and admitted to Ladd that he violated his probation but then did not appear for resentencing Friday.

Ladd sentenced him to the five-year term, giving him credit for 41 days already served. She also issued a warrant for his arrest.

Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Perry said Driver's only previous conviction as an adult for was misdemeanor battery in 2011.
