Q: How many people have been pulled over for speeding in the new 60 mph zone on Interstate 74?

A: State trooper Tracy Lillard didn't have an exact number, but said, "Troopers have made dozens of enforcement stops on I-74."

"The public awareness of the speed zone has grown and we're hoping to continue to reduce the number of crashes," she said.

On Aug. 31, the Illinois Department of Transportation lowered the speed limit on I-74 in Champaign-Urbana from 70 to 60 mph, citing the number of accidents and the number of exits in that stretch.

Many of the crashes happen when people are speeding up or slowing down while merging and exiting, Lillard said, so "hopefully this will eliminate a lot of that.

After the speed limit was lowered, "speed enforcement was stepped up in that particular area, day and night," Lillard said. "Enforcement efforts will continue until we see a decrease in the speeds."
