Urbana city administrator to fill in for retiring public works director

URBANA — City Administrator Carol Mitten will soon pull double duty in taking over the public works department while a nationwide search is conducted to replace longtime director Bill Gray, who is retiring at the end of October after 26 years in city government.

Mayor Diane Marlin said Mitten will not get a raise for her new duties. Her total compensation is just shy of $167,000, according to a notice posted on the city website at the time of her confirmation.

Marlin said the city will hire a firm to conduct the search for Gray's replacement, but because the contract has not yet been finalized, she could not share the firm's name or the cost.
