For years, RICHARD and JOANNE GERARD have made the short trip to Jocko's in Danville for good food and company.

On Friday, the restaurant's staff turned the tables on the Oakwood couple.

A group of Jocko's employees surprised Richard — confined to his home because of illness — with a morning visit equipped with some of his favorites from the menu: chicken noodle soup, Oreo fluff and a brownie.

"It just meant a lot knowing you have friends that care," Joanne said. "It was really special that they thought of doing that."

Longtime Jocko's employee BETH OWENS helped organize the goodwill road trip. Joanne was in on the plan even though she didn't expect such a big turnout.

"It made our weekend," Joanne said.

The Gerards, who just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August, got hooked on Jocko's because "of the family atmosphere," Joanne said.

Right back at you, Owens said. The women's presence left Richard, 83, in tears.

"We just wanted to make his day," said Owens, adding that the staff would have kept visiting if not for having to open the restaurant by 11 a.m. "He could have kept us there all day. They're both near and dear to us."
