Fischer Theatre work sets stage for interior renovations

DANVILLE — Exterior renovations at the Fischer Theatre in downtown Danville are nearing completion.

Now, board members are seeking donations for the next phase: interior renovations.

Board Member Phillip Langley said they wanted to see all of the exterior improvements to the historic downtown building finished before the winter months.

“It’s a huge, huge benefit,” Langley said of this work — a new roof, new windows in front and tuckpointing the brick walls — that will secure the exterior structure of the building and protect the inside for decades.

The exterior work, which is being funded 100 percent by Danville philanthropist Julius W. Hegeler, began about six weeks ago with the tuckpointing. Roof work began last week, Langley said, adding that the general contractor is Paul Offutt.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” he said, referring to this project finally being done. “We are overwhelmed, not only by the scale of the project but by Mr. Hegeler’s generosity.”

“I call him Danville’s guardian angel,” Langley said.

Langley said Hegeler is interested in seeing the theater restored, and he knew this exterior work would greatly help ensure there will be a future for the Fischer Theatre.

Langley said fundraising is ongoing for interior improvements, which include adding restrooms and an elevator.

Anyone interested in donating to the interior renovations can go to the Fischer Theatre website, Facebook page or email fischertheatre@fischertheatre.com.
