UPDATE: Unity community mourns loss

ST. JOSEPH — An 18-year-old Sidney woman died Wednesday evening when her car collided with a train south of St. Joseph.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the woman as Savannah J. Day.

Ms. Day was a standout athlete at Unity High School in Tolono.

She was a four-year member of a cross-country team that won IHSA state championships in 2015 and '17 and finished second in '16.

As a four-year letter winner in girls' track, she was a member of the Rockets' state title-winning 4x800 relay team in 2015.

She signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Danville Area Community College, where she ran cross-country as a freshman this fall.

Ms. Day's death comes during Unity's homecoming week.

"We're all still trying to process this," Unity athletic director Scott Hamilton said this morning.
"It's a sad day for our school, our community and everyone who was fortunate to know Savannah and her smile."

UPDATED 10:06 p.m

ST. JOSEPH — An 18-year-old Sidney woman died Wednesday evening after her car collided with a train south of St. Joseph.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the woman as Savannah J. Day.

Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Andrew Good said Day was killed in the collision on the Homer Lake Road, just east of 2300 E.

The accident happened at 5:31 p.m., and Ms. Day was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:40 p.m., Northrup said.

The woman was driving west on the Homer Lake Road when her car ran into the back of the first engine at the front of the train and rolled over, authorities said.

Northrup said an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday in Urbana.

An inquest may be held at a later date, Northrup said.

Good said the crossing has a signal, which was working, but no gates. The train operators were past the intersection at the time her car struck the train so did not see her.

Good said the woman was alone in her car.

The death is being investigated by the Champaign County coroner's office and the Champaign County sheriff's office.
