In 1918, The Daily Illini made an appeal for books and magazines for the many influenza patients admitted to the local hospitals.

In 1968, five men were arrested by Champaign police following a raid on a gambling operation at the Main Cafe, 57 Main St. The manager, James G. Cash, was also arrested for keeping a gambling house.

In 2003, University of Illinois chemistry Professor Paul Lauterbur won a Nobel Prize for medicine, and UI physics Professor Anthony Leggett won a Nobel Prize for physics.
