UI homecoming parade called off

CHAMPAIGN — The University of Illinois has canceled tonight’s homecoming parade because of cold and wet weather.

The parade was scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. near Sixth and Armory streets in Champaign and wind through Campustown.

A mass email from Danita Brown Young, vice chancellor for student affairs, said the afternoon mixture of rain, sleet and snow, and deteriorating conditions forecast this evening, prompted the decision.

The UI also moved a carnival scheduled for the Quad indoors because of the weather.

“I don’t think anyone forecasted snow today,” spokesman Brian Mertz said, and precipitation was expected to continue through the evening, he said.

“It’s kind of been literally raining on our parade,” Mertz said.

Indoor homecoming events were to continue as planned, and outdoor events will resume this weekend as the weather clears, officials said.
