Two men arrested on drug, weapons charges

URBANA — Police have arrested an Urbana man in connection with a weapons offense in that city.

Darius Jaleel Kirk, 23, who listed an address in the 200 block of South Grove Street, was charged in bond court with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of cannabis and parole revocation.

According to a police report, Urbana officers pulled over a vehicle at University and Cole at 10:59 p.m. Saturday for a vehicle offense.

When police learned that the front passenger, Kirk, had a valid warrant for his arrest, they searched him and found him in possession of suspected cannabis.

The police also found a gun in the glove box of the vehicle.

Kirk is to be back in court today. His bond was set at $25,000.

The driver of the vehicle, Kaleb Anthony Smith, 23, who listed an address in the 1800 block of Rebecca Drive, Champaign, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and not having automobile insurance.

He is also due in court today. He was released after paying 10 percent of a $5,000 bond.

Kirk had been one of the first enrollees in the C-U Fresh Start program, a community initiative to help reduce gun violence.

In May 2017, a Champaign County jury was unable to reach a verdict when Kirk was accused of having weapons at his home in Urbana.

Judge Roger Webber declared a mistrial after a jury deliberated about three hours and told him they were hopelessly deadlocked about what Darius Kirk may or may not have done in November 2016.
