Urbana man accused of trying to rob motorist at gunpoint

URBANA — Bond has been set at $100,000 for an Urbana man who allegedly tried to rob a motorist.

Jamal Thomas Jones, 25, who listed an address in the 1100 block of Colorado Avenue, was charged Monday with attempted armed robbery and aggravated robbery, indicating he had a weapon. Jones is due back in court Nov. 6.

According to a police report, a woman was sitting in her car outside her workplace Sept. 17 in Urbana when a man wearing a hoodie pulled tight around his face, later identified as Jones, came up and tapped the window with a handgun.

The woman said the man pointed the gun at her and told her not to drive away, but she was able to do so without her or her passenger getting hurt.

Surveillance video showed the armed man get into a red SUV.
