Unit 4 says Booker T. Washington principal on 'extended leave of absence'

CHAMPAIGN — Just over a year since taking over as principal at Booker T. Washington STEM Academy, Thea Perkins is on an "extended leave of absence" from the school district, officials said in a letter to parents Tuesday.

In the note sent by Unit 4 Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Ivory-Tatum and obtained by The News-Gazette, Perkins' absence was described as "effective immediately."

It did not state the reason for the move.

Perkins was announced as the Champaign elementary school's principal in March 2017. Prior to joining Unit 4, she'd held various positions in several school districts across the state, including Evanston, Joliet, Maywood, Melrose, Oak Park and Rockford.

During her absence, BTW Assistant Principal Sheffeia Wright will serve as the building's "acting principal," according to the letter.

Unit 4's letter also stated that the district plans to provide "additional supports" to the school's leadership team on an "as-needed" basis.
