Chicago man accused of stealing from employee areas of 4 Champaign stores

URBANA — A Chicago man accused of entering Champaign businesses and stealing from employees faces up to 30 years in prison if he's convicted.

Antonio Carr, 22, was booked into the county jail over the weekend after having been charged a month ago with four counts of burglary.

The charges allege that on Sept. 18, he entered Shoe Carnival and PetSmart in the 2100 block of North Prospect Avenue, the Express store at Market Place Mall, and Guitar Center in the 700 block of West Town Center Boulevard, intending to steal.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said Carr was identified on video taken from those businesses as the man who was going into employee areas and taking possessions such as wallets, identification, cash, cellphones and keys, and later using the stolen debit and credit cards.

The burglaries were the subject of a September Champaign County Crime Stoppers bulletin.

Lozar said Carr has two prior convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle and three for burglary and was on parole at the time of his arrest.

Because of those convictions, he had to be charged as a Class X felon for the burglaries, which are normally a Class 2 felony.

Carr is due back in court Jan. 8.
