Champaign man charged with residential burglary

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly stole electronics from an acquaintance has been charged with residential burglary.

Jerrell Suggs, 19, who listed an address in the 300 block of Van Doren Street, was arraigned Wednesday on the Class 1 felony charge alleging that on Oct. 29, he entered a home in the 800 block of West Park Street, intending to steal.

If convicted, he faces four to 15 years in prison.

Assistant State's Attorney Matt Banach told Judge John Kennedy that Suggs and the victim were hanging out at the victim's apartment before the victim left for a concert, neglecting to lock his door when he left.

When he returned, his television and PlayStation were missing. He told police that he suspected Suggs, whom he did not know well.

Champaign police discovered that Suggs allegedly sold the television at a local pawn store on Nov. 26.

On Tuesday, police found Suggs and talked to him. He admitted being at the man's apartment and initially denied taking anything. Later, he said he took the television because the man owed him money for drugs.

Kennedy set Suggs' bond at $2,500 and told him to be back in court Jan. 8.
