Guilty plea yields probation for Champaign woman

URBANA — A Champaign woman who admitted having heroin in her home has been sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Yasmine Nichols, 25, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Hanover Drive, pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Tom Difanis to possession of a controlled substance as her jury trial — on a more serious charge alleging she had the drugs for sale — was about to start.

Assistant State's Attorney Will Lynch dismissed the more serious charge in return for Nichols' guilty plea. The charge stemmed from a court-authorized search of Nichols' home on Nov. 16, 2017, by the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force which found less than a gram of heroin, scales, packaging materials, cutting agents for the drugs and $1,467.

Nichols had no prior convictions.
