Broadlands man charged with molesting child

URBANA — A Broadlands man was charged Friday with sexually molesting a minor several years ago.

Judge John Kennedy arraigned Michael S. Akers, 38, on two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, alleging that sometime between August 2011 and August 2014, he had sexual contact with a girl under the age of 13 in his home.

The girl, who now lives in another state, recently reported the contact to authorities there, according to Lt. Curt Apperson of the Champaign County sheriff’s office.

A forensic interview was done with the girl, who is now a teen. The information was relayed by police in that state to Champaign County sheriff’s investigators, who interviewed Akers earlier this week.

Apperson said Akers admitted having inappropriate contact with the child once. The girl had told authorities it happened on more than one occasion.

Kennedy set bond for Akers at $200,000 and told him to be back in court Jan. 8.

If convicted, Akers faces six to 60 years in prison.
