Police ID suspects in shooting that injured woman

URBANA — Champaign police are looking for three men they believe were involved in a shooting in north Champaign last month that seriously injured a 25-year-old woman.

A release from Champaign police said arrest warrants have been issued for Donnie Caldwell Jr., 21, Deveonta Lindsey, 25, and Dante Pickens, 25, in connection with the shooting that happened about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Each of the men has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony carrying penalties ranging from six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.

Police were called to the American Legion at 704 N. Hickory St. to a shots fired called. When they got there, they learned the woman had already been taken to the hospital for life-threatening wounds that she sustained when the car she was in was fired upon by another passing car.

The woman was a passenger in a car headed north on Hickory after leaving the Legion. Police said the second vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire, hitting her.

Court records show that Caldwell is currently on parole for a 2016 conviction for unlawful use of weapons by a felon. He was released in February. Lindsey was sentenced a month ago to two years of probation for possession of a controlled substance.

Anyone with information on the shooting, or the whereabouts of Caldwell Jr., Lindsey or Pickens is encouraged to contact Police at 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately with police. Tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers at: 217-373-8477 (TIPS); online at 373tips.com; or the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
