Next time you ignore one of those pesky phone calls from a professional solicitor, consider the folks at Round Barn Manor in Champaign, who enjoy a wonderful turkey dinner this time of year courtesy of the Fraternal Order of Police Illini Lodge 17.

The organization with about 220 members from at least eight area police departments served up the annual meal Thursday night.

Lodge Vice President BRIAN MENNENGA, a Champaign County sheriff's lieutenant, said there's no problem getting officers who want to serve the seniors at the assisted-living center.

"We have a caterer from Paxton, and we put it together and deliver it to rooms," Mennenga said of the event, which he guessed is at least 20 years old.

Next week, lodge members will pitch in for their other big annual project.

Starting about 5:30 a.m. Friday, they'll assemble about 350 boxes of food, enough for a sumptuous holiday dinner, at the ValuCheck store, 1914 Glenn Park Drive, C. Most of the boxes will be delivered that day by agencies who have given the FOP suggested recipients.

Kind of puts a different spin on "to protect and serve."
