UI tells students returning from break to wait till Sunday

URBANA — With a winter storm brewing, the University of Illinois urged students to wait until Sunday to return to campus if they couldn't get back to Champaign-Urbana by Friday evening.

A mass email from Chancellor Robert Jones went out to students around noon Friday, noting that the National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning for much of Illinois that extends well into the weekend.

"As many of you likely plan to travel to campus during that time, we remind you that NWS says a Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you can't return to campus by this evening, we strongly encourage you to wait until Sunday to travel," Jones said.

Students who don't feel they can safely return until Monday should alert the Office of the Dean of Students, the email said.

Said Jones: "I hope your holiday was relaxing and fun, and I look forward to seeing you back on campus — but not until you can get here safely."
