Tara and Doug Hafner, a happily married couple from Oakwood, are spending the weekend in Chicago.

It's not what you think.

Diagnosed with a hereditary kidney disease, Doug underwent transplant surgery on Monday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The donor who was a few doors down: Tara.

"So far, so good," Tara said, "but we have a long way to go."

The Vermilion County natives — Tara graduated from Danville High, Doug from Oakwood — are recuperating in a hotel near the hospital, where they'll return for frequent checkups.

Their transplant journey got off to a rousing start when Tara — the first to test last summer — was told she was a match. Her reaction? "Unbelievable. Relief."

Family and friends have camped out in Chicago all week. Tara's mom, Shelly Steht, is quarterbacking the relief effort.

"We have an amazing support system," Tara said.

The process has taken a physical toll on Doug. Still, while his wife was on the phone for this story, he relayed from nearby that "the hardest part for him was seeing me go through this," Tara said. "But you know what? I'd do it 100 times over."
