Champaign man arrested after allegedly forcing woman into her car trunk

CHAMPAIGN — Police arrested a Champaign man Friday after he allegedly held a razor to the throat of a woman who was giving him a ride early Thursday morning and forced her into the trunk of her vehicle.

According to Champaign police, Robert D. Jackson, 32, requested a ride from the 21-year-old woman at 1:38 a.m. Thursday at a Circle K gas station on North Prospect Avenue in Champaign.

She agreed to give him one, police said, and at some point, he held a razor blade to her throat and forced her into the trunk.

Sgt. Dennis Baltzell said about three hours later, around 4:45 a.m., the vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Tilton, and at 8:24 a.m., someone heard the woman’s voice coming from the trunk of the vehicle, which was parked in an alleyway in the 600 block of West Harrison Street in Danville.

The woman was taken to a local hospital.

Police arrested Jackson about 1:50 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of East Hill Street in Champaign on preliminary charges of kidnapping. He could face additional charges. An investigation aided by security-camera footage helped lead authorities to him, Baltzell said.
