Urbana man arrested over guns, cannabis

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly ran across an interstate highway to avoid talking to police is being held in the Champaign County Jail.

Lorenzo Pettigrew, 22, who listed an address in the 1400 block of West Dublin Street, is expected to be formally charged with weapons and cannabis offenses when he is back in court Monday.

He appeared in court Saturday before Judge Heidi Ladd, who set his bond at $50,000 after hearing the facts surrounding his arrest and that he is currently on parole for aggravated robbery.

About 7 a.m. Friday, members of the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force went to a home in the 0-100 block of Welland Drive, Champaign, with a search warrant.

Champaign police Sgt. Dave Griffet said police had information that Pettigrew might be in possession of a gun and cannabis. Using the METRO team, officers entered the home, but Pettigrew was not present.

Later in the morning, an officer saw Pettigrew walking on a street about a block from the house they were searching and, when they approached, he ran south. Griffet said Pettigrew jumped a fence, ran across Interstate 74 and made his way to Bloomington Road, where he was eventually caught. He had a small amount of suspected cannabis on him.

In the house, where he was known to stay with a woman he is dating, police found about 6 ounces of suspected cannabis in a bedroom that contained other property belonging to Pettigrew.

Police also found three guns in the house, but the home's main occupant claimed ownership of only one, Griffet said.

Because of prior felony convictions for aggravated robbery and robbery, Pettigrew is not allowed to possess a weapon.
