UPDATE: Vehicle and building hit by gunshots in west Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police say no person was apparently hit by gunfire Wednesday night that did damage a vehicle and an apartment balcony.

Police went to the 800 block of South Mattis Avenue about 7:25 p.m. for a call of a vehicle burglary in progress. While there, they received reports of shots being fired in the area.

They found four casings from spent ammunition as well as damage to a vehicle and an apartment balcony.

No injuries have been reported and police do not have any suspect information.

However, police believe that the shooting was not a random act of violence, a release said.

Police ask anyone living in that area who has exterior home video surveillance to share it with them as they try to figure out the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Police ask anyone with information or who was in the area around the time of the shooting to call the department at 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately with police.

CHAMPAIGN — Police have responded to a report of shots fired on the city's west side.

Police received a call about 8 p.m. Wednesday about gunshots in the area of Mattis Avenue and John Street.

Crime-scene tape was put up in the area, but there was no word as to whether anybody was injured.

No arrests have yet been made.

Officers are still at the scene.
