Police investigating Danville's third homicide of 2019

DANVILLE — A man was fatally shot Saturday morning at Danville's Fair Oaks public housing complex.

Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide, the city's third of 2019.

Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said the victim was 33, with a last known address of Chicago. But he is believed to have been living in Danville.

The name of the individual is not being released at this time, pending notification of family by the Champaign County Coroner's Office.

Thomason said that police received a call of shots fired in the area of the 900 block of Hartshorn Street about 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

"Officers were told that an individual was lying in the grass after shots were heard," Thomason said. "When officers arrived a male was found, and immediate medical attention was given. The man was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transferred to a Champaign-area hospital where, at about 2:50 p.m. Saturday, the individual was pronounced deceased."

According to Thomason, there were a large number of people in the area at the time of the incident and police are attempting to locate them.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Danville police or leave their information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 217-446-TIPS. A cash reward is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
