Robbery followed by shots fired in north Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police were trying to find out who robbed a man in a north Champaign neighborhood Saturday, then fired shots.

Sgt. Ben Newell confirmed that at about 1:30 p.m., a man was robbed near the corner of Redwood Drive and Northwood Drive South, which is just a block north of Bradley Avenue.

Preliminary information is that he was robbed of a phone, cash and possibly a gun.

Shortly after the robbery, residents reported hearing shots fired.

Newell said police had not received any reports of anyone being injured by gunfire.

Police were sorting through the information they had but believe there may have been three young men involved in the holdup. It was initially reported that at least two of them were armed. Newell said no suspects had been immediately identified.

Several police officers were talking to residents and taking note of several spent bullet casings in the 1200 block of Northwood Drive South.

A tracking dog from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office was helping Champaign police.
