On Friday's cover of The News-Gazette, Jalil McGee and the rest of the kids of Cub Scout Pack 402 were pictured presenting cards, cookies and pizza to Urbana firefighters at their station on Vine Street.

The goodwill visit culminated a week's worth of work by the kind-hearted boys from C-U, who range from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Some of their families were impacted by last month's fire that heavily damaged Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Champaign.

"It was freezing cold, but the firefighters didn't have a choice but to do their jobs," Cub Scout leader Marilyn Heinsohn said. "The boys wanted to do something for them."

So they devoted Monday's meeting at Canaan Academy to decorating cookies and hand-writing notes (above).

"I'm not going to say it brought tears to the firefighters, but you could tell it meant a lot to them," Marilyn Heinsohn said. "They were very appreciative."
