CHAMPAIGN — A modern brewpub featuring gourmet American fare along with craft beer and organic wines and spirits will soon be on the move.

Destihl Restaurant and Brew Works announced Tuesday on Facebook that it plans to leave its original downtown location in the M2 Building at 301 N. Neil St., C, for southwest Champaign.

Citing a need to expand after outgrowing its space at M2 — including a need for space to host private events, a larger outdoor dining area and more convenient parking for guests and employees — Destihl announced the signing of a long-term lease with Green Street Realty for a 10,000-square-foot brewpub.

Destihl, which opened in 2011, plans to build a new standalone restaurant at the Carle at The Fields development in southwest Champaign, joining Carle, Health Alliance, Hampton Inn & Suites and various retail, office and residential buildings.

Plans call for Destihl to serve as The Fields' anchor restaurant.

The expanded facility is also expected to feature lakeside patio dining, a brewhouse, a lounge area, a large bar and a separate carry-out entrance.

"We look forward to working with Green Street Realty to open our new brewpub at the Carle at The Fields development, and we are excited to build the standalone location in this growing area of Champaign for the long-term growth of our company and as an additional investment in this great community," Destihl co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Matt Potts wrote on Facebook.

"Our brewpubs in Normal and Champaign, along with our new production brewery and beer hall in Normal, have become culinary and artisanal beer destinations, and this awesome, new location at the Fields will raise the bar again for our team, for our guests and for the community for years to come."

Construction on the new facility is expected to begin this fall, with the opening set for summer 2020.
