'Come Home to Krannert Center' anniversary event set for April 12-14

URBANA — "Come Home to Krannert Center," an event-packed weekend commemorating the opening of the University of Illinois' performing-arts center, will be held April 12-14.

Krannert opened in April 1969, and the weekend is planned to be a centerpiece of the center's two-season 50th anniversary festivities.

Registration is required for all events, and patrons can begin registering now.

On the event schedule:

— 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. April 12: Forum on the future of performing arts in higher education at Colwell Playhouse; free.

— 3:30 p.m. April 12: Panel discussion on the genesis and structure of Krannert Center, Colwell Playhouse; free.

— 5-7 p.m. April 12: Casual welcome gathering on Stage 5; free, with a cash bar and food available for purchase.

— 9 a.m. to noon April 13: Krannert Center open house with guided tours, open rehearsals and special displays. Free; meet in the lobby.

— 2 to 3 p.m. April 13: Richmond Family Welcome Gallery tour, Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave., U; free.

— 6 p.m. April 13: The Come Home gala with musical performances, formal remarks and dancing in the lobby; free, with festive attire encouraged.

— 3 p.m. April 14: Debut artist recital at Foellinger Great Hall; $10-$55.
