UPDATE: 2 hurt in wrong-way head-on collision at I-57/I-74 interchange

UPDATE, 9:45 a.m.:

CHAMPAIGN — An Onarga woman has been charged with aggravated DUI after state police said she drove the wrong way on Interstate 57, colliding head-on with a semitrailer at the Interstate 74 interchange and causing injuries to herself and the other driver.

Police said at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, Dawn R. Garrelts, 52, of Onarga was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser north in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a southbound semi driven by Eldemire R. Berlanga, 38, of Mexico, in the left lane at mile marker 237.

Police said the collision caused heavy damage to both vehicles. Garrelts and Berlanga were both taken to an area hospital with what police said appears to be non-life-threatening injuries. Garrelts is in good condition, while a condition for Berlanga is not known. Both were wearing seat belts.

In addition to the charge of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, state police said Garrelts was also cited for improper lane usage and driving without insurance.

UPDATE, 2:19 a.m.:

CHAMPAIGN — State police say the right lane of southbound Interstate 57 is again open and traffic is using the right shoulder. In a release issued at 2 a.m., they said the left lane is still closed and will remain so for about two hours while a semitrailer truck is removed.

They warned motorists to continue using caution in the area.

CHAMPAIGN — State police were on the scene of a two-vehicle accident with injuries early Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 57 at the Interstate 74 interchange.

Traffic is being diverted off I-57 onto I-74. In a release sent about 1 a.m., police said the road would be closed for about 45 minutes. They advised motorists to use caution in the area.
