Top of the Morning, March 15, 2019

As the University of Illinois considers adding a Division I hockey program, one area team has been competing at a championship level.

On March 4 in Springfield, the Champaign-Urbana Chiefs won their second-consecutive Lincoln Land High School Hockey League championship. The Chiefs beat Bloomington 1 by a score of 6-1 to cap an 18-0-2 season.

The team was coached by NICK FABBRINI and RICHIE NELSON. CHRIS JARUSESKI serves as team manager.

"It was a real thrill for the boys," Jaruseski said. "They worked hard for it."

The team comprises players from Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Mahomet and Catlin.

Though the Chiefs are losing six seniors, a strong group returns next season.

"They went through a lot this year and they grew a lot together," Nelson said. "I know the underclassmen, this is what they are used to and this is what they want, They're aiming for back-to-back-to-back. The young ones are hungry enough to not be satisfied."

The roster includes JOHN BLAKELY, TOM BLAKELY, BOWEN BUCHANAN, JOSH BUNTON, COLER CROZIER, CONNOR DOYLE, GRIFFIN DOYLE, CONRAD EBBECKE, JUSTIN FOSSIER, ETHAN GULLEY, BRAYDEN HELFER, GABRIEL HORGAN, ROBBIE JARUSESKI, MATTHEW JOHNSON, CONNOR LAWSON, HENRY LIVINGSTON, LUKE LIVINGSTON, ANDREW McLEAN, CHARLES MOORE, JAY QUIRAM, OLIVER RHODES and LUCAS WILLIAMS.
