UPDATE: Uni's Scholastic Bowl team puts weight behind hype video

Uni High’s Scholastic Bowl team can now say it’s the top unit in the state of Illinois. The Illineks won the IHSA Class 2A state title, with a 430-390 victory over Rockford (Auburn) in Friday afternoon’s championship match at the Peoria Civic Center. Uni High went 2-0 in the preliminary session before easily dispatching Springfield, 760-80, to advance to the final.

Uni High's state-championship Scholastic Bowl team is a mix of brains and brawn.

Before heading to Friday's tournament in Peoria, the Illineks spent time in the school's weightroom at the request of innovative senior Ethan Soloveychik, whose clever hype video has created serious social media buzz.

In it, skinny starters Ethan Ashbrook, Robert Nagel, Dylan Bowman, Jonathan Lau and Tim Cho are shown doing pushups, pullups, squats, curls and situps — studying in between reps — as dramatic music plays and inspirational phrases like "The. Grind. Never. Stops" flash on the screen.

"They had tons of fun with it," Soloveychik said.

The Champaign teen got the idea from pregame videos shown at State Farm Center before UI men's basketball games. It took three days to complete: one for brainstorming, another for filming and a third for editing.

Scholastic Bowl "isn't like football or basketball — they don't get a lot of recognition," Soloveychik said. "I saw it as morale booster."

The entertaining 71-second production played to rave reviews on the big screen at Wednesday's indoor track meet at the UI Armory.

"The reaction to it has been great ... the irony of them going into the weightroom," said Soloveychik, who plans to study business in college, either at Indiana or Illinois. "The (team) has been the talk of the school."
