CHAMPAIGN — Less than a year after opening, Krekel's is closing.

Its last day is scheduled for Saturday, night-shift manager Cassidy Hayes told News-Gazette Media.

It will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, she said.

"Business has been great," Hayes said. "It was picking up, but it was just too late."

She said owners have been tied up in litigation surrounding the ownership of Krekel's that has taken attention away from running the restaurant.

The store had an owner, co-owner and four employees, Hayes said.

It opened in June.

In recent weeks, the store has had to close on certain days, either for weather conditions or because of the litigation.

"The owners had to go to court for litigation, and just the circumstances weren't right," Hayes said. "We couldn't get supplies to the Champaign store and just couldn't open that day."

The Decatur-based restaurant was founded in 1949 and has seven locations in central Illinois.
