The philanthropic crowd at last week's Power of the Purse event didn't disappoint, with United Way of Champaign County reporting a fundraising total of $100,500.

That brings the total raised in the event's five years to over $320,000 that goes toward, among other projects, the Emergency Shelter for Families and a Power of the Purse Scholarship at Parkland College.

Audience participation has been key to the success of the event, put on by United Way's rapidly growing Women United group. This year's edition received support from 75 women-owned businesses. In five years, more than 900 purses have been sold.Always held the Thursday before Mother's Day, the 2020 event will take place May 7.
