Homeless man receives probation, jail time for sexual assault

URBANA — A man who admitted he tried to have sex with a woman against her will has been sentenced to three years of probation and six months in the county jail.

Justin Thompson, 32, homeless, pleaded guilty Friday before Judge Tom Difanis to attempted criminal sexual assault in connection with an Aug. 31 attack on a woman he had just met that day.

Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Alferink said on that day Thompson and the 23-year-old woman were "hanging out" in a west Champaign apartment when he tried to kiss her.

She told him no and he picked her up, took her to a bedroom and pulled her pants and underwear down.

She told police he climbed on top of her so she bit him and screamed. He let her go.

Alferink said Thompson had prior convictions for battery, domestic battery, delivery of a controlled substance, aggravated driving under the influence and driving under revocation.

He had already served 171 days in jail so was released, since he was eligible for day-for-day good time.

Difanis ordered Thompson to cooperate with a sex offender evaluation. Once the judge receives that, he will confirm his sentence of probation. Difanis set an Aug. 5 hearing for that.
