In 1919, an estimated 70 children at the Cunningham Children's Home were quarantined for smallpox. The home was fumigated.

In 1969, area residents turned to their televisions to follow the Apollo 10 astronauts as they sailed around the moon. The astronauts photographed potential landing sites.

In 2004, some 700 bridge players from throughout the Midwest attended the Illini Regional Bridge Tournament at the Chancellor Hotel and Convention Center in Champaign.
