No time to counsel at health center

Friday May 16, 2008

I was surprised and disappointed when the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District decided to terminate its lease with the Champaign County Christian Health Center because social workers were "providing counseling." I've been a social work volunteer with the Christian Health Center for more than two years and unfortunately, neither I nor my colleagues have been able to provide counseling for these clients.

I say unfortunately because the need for counseling is there but when you see 10 clients in three hours who are homeless, hungry, abused and/or without the medications, they need to keep themselves alive and there is no time for counseling. We spend all of our time trying to find resources to keep these forgotten people alive and healthy.
