Police action was correct under law
Regarding Brian Chesley's arrest and Chris Evans' May 13 letter: The United States Supreme Court has long held that officers stopping subjects (for traffic violations) only need to have a reason to stop the vehicle, e.g. a minor traffic violation. It does not matter if they have something else in mind (e.g. wanting to check the subject for warrants, etc.) to make the stop. They simply must have reasonable suspicion.
Chesley's case is substantially the same type of contact, just without the car.
