New off-track betting site is dismaying
Village at the Crossing was developed as a family-friendly center with a small town street atmosphere, and we've all enjoyed its fine businesses. Neighbors, however, were dismayed to read of Jupiter's proposal to lease space to Inter-Track for off-track betting use, raising concerns how gambling fits this family-friendly picture. Carlos Nieto has vowed to keep it distinct from his family-friendly restaurant, but this statement only clarifies that OTB is contrary to the image Jupiter's portrays in this residential area. Nieto further states that it will not be "the focus of our business," but by exposing our neighborhood he has made it the focus of our business.
Attractive site qualities include parking and Interstate access. Parking – and trash – already overflows on occasion into the Meadows, and it's likely this neighborhood use will increase. The article states that Inter-Track is hoping highway access will offer increased revenue over its former location. This business decision comes at our neighborhood's expense, exposing our residential area, homes and children to greater vulnerability from outside influences and ultimately crime. Will increased revenue equate to an increase in vandalism and home theft by those wanting to recoup drinking and gambling loses? More importantly, will the safety of our children enjoying our trails in and around the Crossing fall prey to greater risk? Labeling this OTB site upscale doesn't diminish that gambling mixed with drinking is a volatile mix.
