Letter's numbers need clarification

Thursday August 21, 2008

In my Aug. 14 letter concerning the surge in Iraq, I wrote that millions were killed in the eight years of the French/Algerian war. This figure is in dispute, and my letter should have acknowledged that. The National Liberation Front estimate is 1.5 million dead from war-related causes. The most conservative estimates which I have seen allow that the conflict caused around 170,000 casualties among the French and Algerians, both civilian and military. This lower figure is horrible enough to support my points.

If there is error, I regret it.
