We should not turn our backs on life

Why is it that in today's justice system a person can be put away for the rest of their life for knowingly taking the life of a fellow human being? Ask anybody, and they'd gladly explain that the crime of murder is so horrendous that it's only fitting to give the perpetrator a punishment that fits such a crime.

Yet today, people are being killed every day and nothing is being done about it.
