Form your judgment based on the facts

Tuesday October 27, 2009

There has been a lot of outrage and conclusion-forming in the past few weeks concerning the death of 15-year-old Kiwane Carrington.

Losing such a young person, no matter what race, is hard to take. But why are so many people jumping to conclusions before the investigation is complete? I have no idea what the investigation will conclude, but the purpose is to establish the facts.

I believe it is completely improper and stupid to make quick decisions, including asking for the resignation of the police chief, before all facts are known. Police work is hazardous. Police are trained on what level of force to be ready for based on information they have when responding.

Otherwise, officers will be injured or killed while protecting the public – the same public complaining about police action from this incident. I hope the Champaign City Council is smart enough to take into consideration all facts before making rash decisions regarding operations or public servants.
