Coach's decision was piling it on
I am writing in reference to the recent Unity/Shelbyville football game in which Unity won 40-7.
I thought it was unsportsmanlike for Unity to go for a two-point conversion when it was up by such a wide margin. I don't know why a coach would exhibit that kind of gamesmanship to his players. That's not teaching the players how to be good winners.
I knew Shelbyville, as a young team, would lose because we have very few experienced players. So the loss did not bother me. It was the Unity coach rubbing it in that bothered me. I'm sure if he were in that same situation he would feel the way that I and other sports fans feel.
The game was not in doubt when the coach elected to go for two. The Shelbyville kids were already down, but to humiliate them like that was unnecessary. I hope sometime that if the Unity football team is getting beat that the opposing coach has more class than to run the score up, especially with a two-point conversion. I'm not saying I hope Unity loses or gets blown out. I'm saying I hope the opposing coach has more class and is a good winner if the tables are ever turned on Unity.
As for the Unity players, I wish them good luck in the playoffs. They deserve to be there because they are a very good football team. I will be rooting Unity on for a state championship.
