Urbana needs new swim pool

Wednesday November 4, 2009

I write in response to Dr. Laura Payne's letter regarding Crystal Lake Pool.

Surveys show that very few Urbana residents would use the spray park Payne proposes, but the majority do support an outdoor pool. Why spend money on a spray park people do not want?

As a longtime user of both Crystal Lake and Sholem pools in the C-U community, I do not believe the current supply of outdoor swimming options meets the demand.

Payne mentions the University of Illinois campus recreation facility. But that facility is not open to the public. Even if you do have a family member at the UI and purchase a membership, children are only allowed during limited hours. Plus, there are limited facilities for parents with young children, and there is inadequate parking. This makes campus recreation a useless option for parents who want to take their kids to the pool.

Swimming at Crystal Lake Pool was an inexpensive, enjoyable way to spend the afternoon. The pool also provided space for programs, including swim lessons, exercise classes, summer camps and swim team. These programs all contribute to "positive youth development and reduction in risky behavior by Urbana youth" Payne suggests the park district address.

She may be an authority on park administration, but Payne is off the mark on this one. Reviving an outdoor swimming facility in Urbana would be an asset to our community.
