Smoking in public places is banned in Illinois. At least, it's supposed to be.
State legislators banned public smoking in Illinois as of Jan. 1, but for all practical purposes the smoke ban is enforced throughout the state mostly by the honor system rather than the rule of law.

And you apparently forgot that there's more to an editorial page than just drafting tired, "attention-getting" essays--certain to evoke strong feelings from the small-minded community members incapable of change. Perhaps you can next write about how when you were a boy you watched the "chief" dance and he made you happy, so that should be a good enough reason to keep him. That'll certainly keep the futile argument going and inspire a few more letters to the editor.
Here's all the necessary guidance you need regarding the smoking ban: do not smoke in public. If there's a problem enforcing this law, perhaps your forthcoming editorials on allowing concealed-carry laws through will one day mean the illicit cigarettes can be shot directly out of a bar patron's mouth.

Yeah, not to mention the "small-minded" statements from the "anti-smoking NAZI's" that DO NOT want to allow an establishment to have control over their OWN business!! to ALLOW A LEGAL, HEAVILY TAXED, SUBSTANCE in their OWN establishment, for the "enjoyment" of their customer patrons, and workers!!
I was in a bar the other evening and two patrons were "sharing" a cigarette. I smiled at them and when they were asked to go outside to smoke I told them they were "bad girls" and should be "spanked". One turned her bakside to me and I "spanked" her three swats (not hard, to those who would accuse me of "assault"), as she laughed and walked outside to enjoy another smoke. THAT should be the "extent" of the "punishment" meted out for such an "infraction"!! NOT TO BE SHOT AT!!! AS jstrauss SUGGESTS WOULD BE APPROIATE!!!ENDANDERING ALL IN THE LINE OF FIRE!!!!WHAT A MORON!!!!!!

I certainly wouldn't want someone to be dandered. Allergies are already rampant enough.

The bars in my town are dead, once thriving with live bands, now practically nothing. Now beer prices are up all over.

jstrauss doesn't want someone to be "dandered" but he WOULD like to see them shot (as stated above), isn't that just like an anti-smoking NAZI?
The bars are empty because the anti-smokers that insist on a smoke free environment are NOT bar patrons, and the smokers can more easily afford beer prices at home where they can enjoy a smoke with their beers!
Those that are concerned about the loss of tax revenue (from lack of business at said bars) will just tax something/someone else, and the bar owners who will not be able to keep their doors open, will close down and work for someone else, instead of employing a half dozen people.
