Are the bar owners lying about business?

I don't understand how business can be down in bars and restaurants due to the smoking ban. My wife and I were regular visitors to local bars and restaurants before the smoking ban. We've continued to enjoy the local nightlife throughout the ban.
Here's the thing. Every time we go out, the places we go seem to be packed to the rafters. We can barely get a place to sit.
